Hanna Somatic Yoga

September 2023, I have just finished my Somatic Yoga Professional training developed by Eleanor Criswell Hanna, adding a new sensible layer and perspective to my teachings of Yoga. It was a profound, enlightening experience. What I have learned over this past year is not short of miracles. And I do believe in miracles. It answers and confirms one of my deepest beliefs: we have the power to heal ourselves.

 

This training has touched every layer of my being, my Soma. The word, first used by Thomas Hanna, comes from the Greek “living body” as defined in a Somatic viewpoint, and is the perception of the body seen and perceived from the inside. It is the living, self-aware, self-sensing, internalized perception of our body, which include movements, feelings, sensations and intentions.

Somatic Yoga is a blend of somatic exercises and Yoga. It is a practice that helps you reprogram your brain to reduce or even eliminate pain caused by your habitual, repetitive patterns of movements. You learn to move in a new way, coming out of the auto pilot mode where you unconsciously create the tension and the dis-ease. To then now reconnect within, paying close attention to the sensations in your body as you move consciously.

Our Body is so much more than just an external shape or size, and you and only you have the privilege of seeing yourself as a “Me, I, Myself” that no other person can experience but you.

Our Soma is the complete view of a Human being. When we learn to see, feel our body as a whole mind-body integrated, we can perceive our internal functions and improve the control of our body from the inside-out, giving us the ability to change ourselves in profound ways.

I love to brag about my teacher Eleanor Criswell Hanna who turned 85 years-old during my training. Not only is she brilliant, mega intelligent, kind and compassionate, she is lively and a living embodiment of what she teaches. That age is a myth and becoming old doesn’t have to be difficult or horrible.

 

Hanna Somatic Education® (also known as Hanna Somatics) was founded by her late husband Thomas Hanna. Eleanor created the Somatic Yoga program which is a blend of somatic exercises with yoga practices.

 

During a Somatic Yoga class, you learn to move in a much slower fashion, with increased mind-body awareness into the postures. You pause between poses to be more aware of the proprioceptive feedback from doing the posture. It is not so much focused on how the pose looks, but on how the pose feels.

See, when a muscle or a muscle group is chronically contracted, it is contracted because your nervous system is contracting it. By becoming aware and moving consciously, you can regain control over the contraction and utilization of those muscles and shift into more voluntary, organized areas of your brain.

 

“Hanna Somatic Education is a rapidly effective form of neuromuscular (mind-body training) movement re-education that goes directly to the root cause of most chronic muscular pain: the brain and the way in which it senses and organizes muscles and movement. By learning to regain awareness, sensation, and motor control of muscles—an educational process that can only be achieved through movement—the brain can remember how to relax and move the muscles properly. This process of sensory-motor training creates improved muscle function and enhanced sensory awareness.

 

Hanna Somatic Education is a safe, gentle, and common-sense approach to reverse chronic pain. It is the only method of pain relief and sensory-motor training that targets the condition of Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA).

 

Sensory Motor Amnesia is the condition of chronically tight muscles that have learned to stay contracted due to repeated and reflexive responses to stress such as accidents, injuries, surgeries, repetitive tasks, and ongoing emotional stress. The resulting patterns of muscular contraction that develop result in such common conditions as chronic back pain, neck, shoulder, and hip pain, limited mobility, joint pain, poor posture, shallow breathing, and uneven leg length.
